Infections could be the real cause of heart attacks.
Heart disease has long been blamed mostly on cholesterol, clogged arteries, and high blood pressure. But new research from Finland and the UK has revealed something shocking: hidden bacterial colonies may be quietly setting the stage for heart attacks.
Deep inside arterial plaques, scientists have found bacterial biofilms – sticky, gelatinous clusters that can lie dormant for decades. Protected from the immune system and antibiotics, they sit in silence until something wakes them up.
It could be a viral infection. It could be stress. But once activated, these bacteria trigger inflammation so severe that the plaque can rupture. The result? A sudden blood clot and, often, a heart attack.
Researchers detected the genetic fingerprints of oral bacteria inside the arteries of patients who had died suddenly and in those undergoing surgery for advanced atherosclerosis. In some cases, they even caught bacteria breaking free from the biofilm during a heart attack, with the immune system reacting in real time.
This discovery adds a new layer to our understanding of heart disease. If infections play a role, new diagnostics, treatments, and even vaccines might one day help prevent the world’s deadliest condition.

To protect Munich airport, local police have deployed a laser system.
According to Bild, the laser equipment will allow determining the distance to drones and shooting them down. At the same time, the Central Office for Combating Terrorism and Extremism is investigating who is launching these drones.
"Inflatable mattresses and 3,000 cots have also been prepared in the airport terminals to provide passengers with minimal comfort in case of delays or cancellations of flights due to drones," Bild writes.
