Scientists see a virus hitchhike on another virus for the first time.

Under a powerful transmission electron microscope, researchers captured a tiny satellite virus physically clinging to the “neck” of a larger helper virus. Both are bacteriophages – viruses that infect bacteria – but this interaction was completely unexpected.

The smaller virus is a satellite, meaning it can’t replicate on its own. It needs a helper virus to hijack a host cell’s machinery. By attaching directly to its partner, the satellite essentially hitches a ride, ensuring they invade the same bacterial cell together. Think of it as viral piggybacking.

The team discovered this while studying environmental samples of phages that infect Streptomyces bacteria. To their surprise, about 80% of the helper viruses they examined had a satellite bound to them, with others showing “bite marks” where satellites had recently been attached.
