Over 30 years ago Michael Hall, a molecular biologist at the University of Basel, made a groundbreaking discovery of the gene Target of Rapamycin, or TOR, that proved critical to the development of many cancer drugs. Today his seminal work is fuelling this area of healthcare research.

Donald Trump and his administration employ the laws and courts wherever it suits them. Wherever laws and courts pose an obstacle to their program, they disregard those right up to the limit imposed by the current balance of power within the state.

It is clear for all to see that for them, the law is simply one of many weapons—it has no power to bind them. Yet many of Trump’s opponents continue hamstring resistance by focusing on questions of legality and other niceties, failing to grasp the reality of the situation.

“Healthy, free-flowing rivers are central to adapting to the climate crisis and boosting biodiversity, but Europe’s rivers are the most fragmented in the world,” he said. “We need to keep scaling up the removal of small obsolete dams that are blocking our rivers and set new records every year.”

Meandering rivers have slower flow speeds, evaporate more water, create more biodiversity and less erosion. They are also less prone to flooding than their straightened counter parts.

On this day, 20 June 1967, boxing legend Muhammad Ali was convicted for refusing the draft for the Vietnam war in Houston, Texas. Ali had been a vocal opponent of the US war, saying “Why should they ask me to put on a uniform and go 10,000 miles from home and drop bombs and bullets on brown people in Vietnam while so-called Negro people in Louisville are treated like dogs?” To try to quell the escalating resistance to the war, Ali was given the maximum sentence of five years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. But their efforts were unsuccessful, and the anti-war movement continued to grow. Despite the Nation of Islam beginning to distance themselves from Ali, demonstrations supporting him took place around the world, from Egypt to Guyana to London to Ghana. Four years later his conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court. Ali had no regrets: "I wasn’t trying to be a leader. I just wanted to be free. And I made a stand all people, not just Black people, should have thought about making, because it wasn’t just Black people being drafted. The government had a system where the rich man’s son went to college, and the poor man’s son went to war.
