TIL that Norway, after gaining independence from Sweden in 1905, offered the throne to Prince Carl of Denmark - but he refused to accept unless the people voted for a monarchy over a republic. 79% said yes, and he became King Haakon VII, the only known king ever to be elected by popular vote. Good Idea: Boycott Spotify

https://www.middleeasteye.net/trending/spotify-faces-boycott-calls-over-ceos-investment-defence-startup

Spotify is dominating the music streaming world, but it’s screwing artists and flattening music into bland, algorithm-friendly mush.
- Spotify pays $0.003–$0.005 per stream, and tracks under 1,000 streams earn nothing. Big names hog the cash, leaving indie artists broke.
- Their CEO’s investing in military AI, and they donated $150k to Trump’s 2017 inauguration.
- They push generic (AI) “ghost artist” tracks to save on royalties.
- Spotify’s max 320 kbps sounds like a tin can next to other services lossless audio.
- Their Algorithms favor safe, nostalgic hits, making music feel like elevator background noise.

What to Do Instead:
- Join the streaming cooperative https://resonate.coop/
- Transfer playlists with Soundiiz or TuneMyMusic in minutes.
- Buy music on Bandcamp (artists get 80–85%) or grab vinyl from local shops.
- Host listening parties with friends or tune into college radio for real discoveries.
- Support artists directly: join their email lists, share their tracks, or Venmo them $5 for a coffee.

You don’t need Spotify to love music.. Let’s make music human again.

On this day, 30 June 1960, Congo achieved independence from Belgium following decades of brutal colonial rule which killed 8-10 million people – half its population. Belgian authorities used men for forced labour in the rubber industry, having the wives and children of workers who didn't meet their daily quotas dismembered, killed and even eaten. Following independence, Belgium and other Western powers continued to maintain power and rob the country's rich natural resources. The first democratically elected Prime Minister, socialist Patrice Lumumba was arrested, tortured and murdered on the instructions of Belgium and the CIA, who then installed a brutal dictator. This book gives a detailed history of colonialism in Congo: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/collections/books/products/lord-leverhulme-s-ghosts-colonial-exploitation-in-the-congo-jules-marchalPic # 2 is a vandalised statue of Belgian King Leopold
