On April 5th, 2010, WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video shot from an Apache helicopter gun-sight. It depicts the indiscriminate slaying of two Reuters news staff and two young children who were seriously wounded after the attack.
Reuters sought the video via a Freedom‑of‑Information request but never received it. The military didn’t disclose how the Reuters staff died or how the children were hurt. After Reuters pressed for an inquiry, the U.S. military investigated and concluded the soldiers’ actions complied with the law of armed conflict and its own Rules of Engagement.
On their website, Wikileaks stated: « WikiLeaks wants to ensure that all the leaked information it receives gets the attention it deserves. In this particular case, some of the people killed were journalists that were simply doing their jobs: putting their lives at risk in order to report on war. Iraq is a very dangerous place for journalists: from 2003- 2009, 139 journalists were killed while doing their work. »
On March 19, Disruption Network Lab invited 5 whistleblowers and journalists to discuss the impact of Wikileaks on War and military, beyond the 2010s.
