The study by Trucost for The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity reveals a shocking truth about the world's major industries: they depend on $7.3 trillion of unpriced natural capital annually to turn a profit. This "externalization" of costs means that the true environmental impacts of these industries—primarily from greenhouse gas emissions, water and land use, air and water pollution, and waste—are not reflected in their economic calculations. Notably, none of the top 20 industrial sectors would be profitable if they accounted for their full environmental costs. TIL: Short Sleeper Syndrome is a gene mutation discovered by the University of Pittsburgh in 2014. They can function normally with less than 6 hours of sleep and never need to "recover" from lack of sleep as opposed to people who purposefully limit sleep. The mutation was given to mice and worked.
