Ban on conversion practices in the European Union

"Objectives :

We call on the European Commission to propose a binding legal ban on conversion practices targeting LGBTQ+ citizens in the European Union:

Conversion Practices are interventions aimed at changing, repressing or suppressing the sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression of LGBTQ+ persons.

Such practices, due to their discriminatory, degrading, harmful and fraudulent nature have been qualified as torture by the United Nations, and are currently being banned in a growing number of States.

The EU plays a key role in the protection of fundamental rights and should take actions to fight against all inhuman practices. The Commission should propose a directive adding conversion practices to the list of euro-crimes and/or amend the ongoing directive on equality (2008) to include a ban on these practices.

Furthermore, to fight against the legislative moratorium, the Commission should also enforce a non-binding resolution calling for a widespread ban of conversion practices in the EU.

Finally, we call on the Commission to amend the Victims’ Rights Directive to establishes minimum standards on the rights, support and protection of victims of conversion practices.

All member states should introduce a ban on conversion practices or review their current ones."

On this day, 17 May 1959, Kelso Cochrane was fatally stabbed in a racist attack in West London, UK. His murder would become a catalytic event in race relations at the time which eventually led to the formation of the now world famous Notting Hill Carnival. Cochrane was a recent immigrant from North America, having being born in Antigua. Working as a carpenter he aspired to be a lawyer and settled in the Notting Hill area of West London, with a large Caribbean population. At the time the area was a hotbed of activity for British fascists and there were frequent violent confrontations with groups of Black men. Police investigating the murder were accused of being involved in a cover-up and the murderer has never been identified. A huge funeral procession drew the eyes of the press and the government was eventually pressured into launching an investigation into race relations. Cochrane's murder along with general racial tensions in the area led local community activist Rhaune Laslett to organise a small community street fair to bring recent immigrants together in the area in the mid-1960s. This would eventually become the Notting Hill Carnival, which is attended by over a million people each year.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8916/murder-of-kelso-cochrane To access this hyperlink, click our link in bio then click this photo

Good idea: solar power to smelt metal

https://www.ecowatch.com/solar-power-heat-metal-smelting-cement-quartz.html

Industrial processes like smelting metals or manufacturing cement can be carbon-intensive, as they typically rely on fossil fuels to generate enough energy to produce high temperatures. But researchers have found a way to use solar thermal trapping, rather than fossil fuels, to reduce the emissions of some industrial processes.

Scientists used semitransparent materials, including synthetic quartz, to capture sunlight with a thermal trapping effect. The team connected a synthetic quartz rod, partially lined with platinum, to an opaque silicon carbide disk, which would absorb the sunlight, and exposed one end of the quartz rod to concentrated solar radiation.
TIL the first recorded incident of "mooning" was in 80 AD. A Roman soldier showed his buttocks to Jewish pilgrims gathered in Jerusalem for Passover. This led to riots and the deaths of ten thousand people. [source, comments]
