Open science aims to make scientific research freely accessible to everyone, promoting greater knowledge sharing and faster scientific progress. Individuals can support open science legally by advocating for open access policies at their institutions, using and contributing to open access platforms, and discussing the importance of open access with policymakers.

While piracy sites like Sci-Hub provide access to paywalled research, making vast amounts of scientific knowledge available to those who can't afford expensive journal subnoscriptions, they aren't a sustainable (legal) solution.
However, this widespread access highlights the demand for open access and pressures publishers to change their models. Ultimately, focusing on legal actions helps build a more equitable and lasting system for accessing scientific knowledge.
