Happy birthday to the first democratically elected leader of today’s DR Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Black revolutionary Malcolm X once said, “Lumumba [is] the greatest Black man who ever walked the African continent. He didn’t fear anybody and had the people in power so scared they had to kill him.”

For his anti-imperialism and his vision of a united Congo, the CIA ordered his assassination but could not finish the job. The US and Belgium then covertly funneled cash & aid to rival politicians who organized a coup & arrested Lumumba, who was then beaten, tortured, and killed. Read on.
