A seismic political shift is reshaping West Africa, as the Sahel states Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali have united under a new confederation. The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) formation marks a decisive break from the Western-backed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bloc, solidifying the unity of these rebel states and representing 72 million people.
The AES has also blocked exports of some crucial resources saying “This era is gone forever. Our resources will remain for us and our population’s.” Burkina Faso’s Traore said.
Turning their backs on the West has coincided with moving towards other foreign powers like Russia as well as China, who have been quick to extend their support to the countries rebuking the West and taking advantage of the opportunity to advance their own interests.
But will this change result in meaningful improvement in the lives of the people? Leave a comment.

On this day, 9 July 1657, English major-general William Brayne wrote home from Jamaica explaining that some soldiers who had recently arrived were sick and dying from illness. He then requested indentured servants to settle in Jamaica to help establish it as a self-sufficient colony. This straightforward request would not be noteworthy, if it were not for the fact that this letter has been subsequently distorted and misrepresented by white supremacists, Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis who devised a myth of "Irish slaves" in the Caribbean and North America. One source of the claims is a blog post ennoscriptd "Irish slaves in the Caribbean", in which James Cavanaugh claims that in Jamaica, enslaved "Africans received much better treatment, food and housing" than "Irish slaves". He goes on to say: "To end this barbarity, Colonel William Brayne wrote to English authorities in 1656 urging the importation of Negro slaves on the grounds that, 'as the planters would have to pay much more for them, they would have an interest in preserving their lives, which was wanting in the case of (Irish)….' many of whom, he charged, were killed by overwork and cruel treatment." Cavanaugh's denoscription of the letter as well as the supposed quote from it are entirely false, but it has still been cited by many other publications supporting the "Irish slaves" myth, including liberal ones like the Daily Kos. The intention of white supremacists conflating indentured servitude with chattel slavery is to try to blame Black people for their systematic disenfranchisement in the US today, essentially arguing that Irish people were treated far worse but now do not feel the need to complain about "racism".Indentured servitude was a form of bonded labour to which around half of all white settlers came to Britain's 13 colonies. On this day, 10 July 1985, the French intelligence service carried out a terrorist attack a Aotearoa (New Zealand), which killed Fernando Pereira, a Portuguese photographer (pictured). The target of the attack was environmentalist group Greenpeace, and their ship, Rainbow Warrior, which was headed to protest against French nuclear testing in the Moruroa Atoll. Agents of the DGSE attached two limpet mines to the hull, which exploded.France initially denied responsibility but NZ police arrested two of its agents and charged them with murder. Eventually they were sentenced to periods of seven and 10 years' imprisonment for manslaughter and “wilful damage”. However, the United Nations negotiated a settlement under which they were transferred to a French colonial prison. They were then set free after just two years. The terrorists were promoted and decorated upon their return to France. After the bombing, the damaged ship was relocated to Matauri Bay, in order to become a living reef for marine life.Greenpeace purchased a new ship, and also named it Rainbow Warrior, after a prophecy of the Néhinaw (Cree) people, which stated: “When the world is sick and dying, the people will rise up like Warriors of the Rainbow…”The attack galvanised resistance to nuclear weapons in Aotearoa.More information, sources and map: https://stories.workingclasshistory.com/article/8208/rainbow-warrior-blown-up * If you enjoy our social media posts be sure to check out our podcasts. Good idea: use dead leaves for bags and paper

Using dead leaves rather than healthy trees to make paper: that's the idea behind Ukrainian startup Releaf Paper.
While still at school, founder Valentyn Frechka used his passion for biochemistry to find new ways to make cellulose, the key ingredient in paper.
After a failed experiment with grass and straw, he discovered that it was possible to extract fibre from leaves.

With all eyes on Gaza, Israel expands its seizure of Palestinian land in the West Bank, announcing the biggest land grab for the settlers in more than 30 years. The endeavor is spearheaded by Israel’s far-right finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who himself is living in a settlement built on stolen Palestinian Lands.
Smotrich, who became in charge of the planning procedures in the West Bank, took that rule, which the minister of defense handled before June 2023. Israel has built more than 160 settlements with more than 700,000 settlers living in it, in the Bank and East Jerusalem, killing any future for a Palestinian state.
In March 2023, a report by UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk stated that Israel’s continuous expansion of settlements amounts to the transfer by Israel of its own civilian population into the territories that it occupies, which amounts to a war crime under international law.
