“The IMF and the World Bank are here to take over [our] land.” – A protester was killed in Kenya’s resurgent anti-government uprisings during the country’s worst political crisis since independence from British colonial rule in 1963. Several concessions from President Ruto have failed to appease the tireless protesters, who have vowed to “finish the mission,” in other words, Ruto must go.

The IMF-backed tax reform bill that sparked the protests in the first place was canceled by Ruto, but the IMF said it would press for reform plans anyway, which has left at least 50 killed and hundreds injured. Earlier, the IMF urged the government to ignore the protests and hold on to the unpopular neoliberal reforms.

Good Idea: Understand the effects of poverty

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1238041

Poverty can make people think and act in less capable ways because worrying about money takes up a lot of mental energy. For example, people perform worse on cognitive tests when they are thinking about their financial struggles. This effect is temporary, as seen in farmers who show better cognitive performance after harvest when they have more money compared to before the harvest when they are poorer. This shows that poverty can temporarily reduce a person's cognitive capacity by occupying their thoughts with financial concerns.

The pressure to immigrate to the United States is itself the consequence of US foreign policy and worldwide neoliberal economic policies that have impoverished millions, forcing them to flee war zones and economic crises. Soon, we will see even more people displaced by environmental disasters caused by industrially produced climate change.

Again, these are the fault of the ruling class, not the poor.

By immiserating both overseas populations and residents of the United States while suppressing anti-capitalist protest movements, neoliberal centrists created a situation in which fascists can pretend to be the only ones offering an alternative. But the supposed alternative represented by politicians like Donald Trump will only speed up the process of wealth concentration that caused this problem in the first place.

Organize to resist fascism and abolish capitalism and the state.

Top UN court says Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal

The United Nations' highest court said on Friday that Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories and settlements there are illegal and should be withdrawn as soon as possible, in its strongest findings to date on the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

The advisory opinion by judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), known as the World Court, was not binding but carries weight under international law and may weaken support for Israel. read more

Good Idea: Open Source all software that has been developed for public bodies

https://joinup.ec.europa.eu/collection/open-source-observatory-osor/news/new-open-source-law-switzerland

Switzerland has passed a law requiring public sector software to be open source, aiming for more transparency, security, and efficiency. This means government software code must be shared publicly unless there are security or third-party rights issues. This change reduces dependence on proprietary software, encourages innovation, and potentially lowers costs. Despite initial resistance, extensive discussions led to this decision, which could inspire other countries to adopt similar measures, enhancing public trust and digital sovereignty.

Good Idea: Turn Start-Up to Start-Coop

https://coopcreator.ca/resource/how-to-start-a-cooperative/

Cooperatives offer a unique advantage over traditional startups by being democratically controlled and owned by their members, which means decisions are made collectively, and profits are shared among everyone involved. This shared ownership creates a strong sense of community and commitment. Co-ops also reduce individual financial risk by pooling resources and expertise, often focusing on long-term sustainability and meeting specific community needs. This collaborative approach can lead to cost savings and a more stable, resilient business.
