On this day, 19 August 1944, this photograph (left) was taken in Paris of 18-year-old French Resistance fighter, Simone Segouin, on the first day of the battle to liberate the city from Nazi occupation.Segouin, under the nom de guerre Nicole Minet, was a member of Francs-Tireurs et Partisans, a resistance group formed by the Communist Party. Previously in the fighting she had helped kill two Nazis, and assisted in the capture of 25 German prisoners of war in Chartres. After the liberation of Chartres, Segouin travelled to Paris to take part in its liberation.Segouin survived the war, was awarded the Croix de Guerre, and later worked as a paediatric nurse.
