On this day, 5 October 1789, thousands of women in Paris, angry over the high price and scarcity of bread, ransacked the city armoury for weapons and besieged the Palace of Versailles in a key turning point of the French revolution. One eyewitness heard the women say that "men didn't have enough strength to avenge themselves and that they would demonstrate that they were better than men."The women demanded to meet with the king, Louis XVI, with the intention of requesting bread and progress on completing a new, revised constitution limiting the power of the monarchy and establishing new rights for the population. A small delegation of women was granted a meeting with the king, who gave them written agreement on their demands.Meanwhile, other women occupied the national assembly, sat in the speaker's chair and disrupted decision-making.The following morning, the crowd broke into the royal château and killed two royal bodyguards, after which the king agreed to leave and relocate to Paris, where martial law was declared in an ultimately-futile attempt to quell dissent.Learn the full history of the revolution in this book: https://shop.workingclasshistory.com/products/the-great-french-revolution-1789-1793-peter-kropotkin To access this hyperlink, click our link in bio # 1 then click this photoPic: Contemporary illustration of the women's march on Versailles

TIL Medieval Peasants generally received anywhere from eight weeks to a half-year off. At the time, the Church considered frequent and mandatory holidays the key to keeping a working population from revolting. [source, comments]
Swiss Song of the Day 🇨🇭⛓️: Zeal & Ardor, founded by Manuel Gagneux is one of the most intriguing band projects in contemporary Metal. It all started on 4chan, where Gagneux asked the community which 2 musical genres don't fit together at all. The answer he liked the most: Gospel and Black Metal. The first single from 2017 embodies this crossover for the first time. The leitmotif of the album is consequently the following: what if the African slaves worshipped Satan instead of God? https://youtu.be/jlGBer0VoF8
