Māori activists began a national mobilization on November 10 to oppose proposed legislation threatening Māori Treaty rights.

Meanwhile, this month's global talks on climate change will be hosted by Azerbaijan, an unrepentant petro-state that just last year used oil revenues to carry out full-scale ethnic cleansing in the region of Nagorno-Karabakh, which was inhabited by Armenians until September 2023. In the months since then, the autocratic government of Azerbaijan has locked up dozens of Azerbaijani journalists and activists, including Anar Mammadli, co-founder of the Climate Justice Initiative.
Suffice it to say that, especially with Donald Trump taking over the US government at the head of the petrochemical lobby, it is a grave mistake to look to government agencies to moderate the processes that are causing climate change. Grassroots movements employing direct action are our only hope.
