Good Idea: forming alliances against big tech

https://techcrunch.com/2024/11/11/ecosia-and-qwant-two-european-search-engines-join-forces-on-building-an-index-to-shrink-reliance-on-big-tech/

Qwant, a French privacy-focused search engine, and Ecosia, a Berlin-based eco-friendly search engine, are partnering to create a European search index to reduce reliance on Big Tech, particularly Microsoft’s Bing and Google. This joint venture, named European Search Perspective (EUP), aims to enhance their services and lower costs by developing their own search index while integrating generative AI. Both companies see this as an opportunity to innovate and strengthen European tech sovereignty, especially in light of rising API costs and increased regulatory support for local tech initiatives.

On this day, 17 November 1983, six people of Indigenous and mestize origin founded the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) in the mountains of Chiapas, Mexico. 11 years later, around 3,000 armed EZLN members launched an uprising taking control of a considerable amount of land in the region, freeing prisoners and destroying police and army barracks. In a counter-attack by the Mexican army, the guerrillas lost control of many towns and cities and retreated into the Lacandon jungle. Subsequently the Zapatistas established a number of self-governing autonomous communities, with a population of over 300,000 people who are mostly from the Chol, Kanjobal, Mame, Tjolobal, Tzeltal, Tzozil, and Zoque Indigenous communities. Other than personal property, private ownership was abolished, with collective ownership of land and collectively owned and run workplaces. Radical, democratic schools, where pupils are not graded, were established, as was a universal healthcare service, drastically improving public health and reducing infant mortality. The communities also have a strong commitment to Indigenous, women's and LGBT+ rights. So if you know five people who think like you, set up a group! KWAME TURE: WE CAN'T BE POLITICALLY IRRESPONSIBLE

In this video, revolutionary Pan-Africanist Kwame Ture emphasises that our political responsibility should extend beyond just voting in elections - which take years to come round. We need to show daily commitment to the revolutionary struggle. He encourages us to educate ourselves and stay informed about current events to better guide our activism.

Ture left the US in the late ‘60s after being targeted by the FBI (which had secretly identified him as the man who would succeed Malcolm X as the dominant Black leader) and moved to Africa, where he became a prominent figure in the pan-African movement. It was there he changed his name from ‘Stokely Standiford Churchill Carmichael’ and campaigned for revolutionary socialist pan-Africanism. He played a key role in founding the All-African People's Revolutionary Party. Today, the AAPRP has a presence across the continent, from Guinea-Bissau to Kenya. Ture died on 15 November 1998 in Guinea, aged 57.

Physical cash not only influences how much we spend but also fosters a profound sense of psychological ownership that digital payments cannot replicate. The visceral nature of cash—its smell, feel, and the act of counting it—creates an emotional connection that digital payments lack.

Conservatives are more likely to click on sponsored search results and are likely to be more trusting of sponsored communications than liberals, who lean toward organic content. Conservatives were more likely to click ads in response to broad searches because they may be less cognitively demanding.

Win for Senegal over the EU: https://thepoint.gm/africa/gambia/headlines/senegal-eu-vessels-to-stop-fishing
The termination of the treaty is no huge loss for the state of Senegal. But it could help the local fishermen. The important part is the quote below. It is one of these bitter jokes only history writes. EU accused Senegal of "serious shortcomings" and "failures in monitoring, control and surveillance systems". EU failed to mention though, that illegal vessels from EU countries fish there with or without the treaty. The reality without the treaty stays the same: EU deplets a whole ecosystem, destroys a local economy, hinders Senegal indirectly from building their own fishing industry - and most ironically - causes a wave of migrants to Europe.
