TIL while filming Metropolis (1927) they would often end up with more children in the evening than in the morning. Coming from the poorest areas of Berlin, the children would sneak onto set or climb over the fence to experience the warm rooms, games, toys, cocoa, cake, and regular meals [source, comments]

Good Idea: Tax the Billionaires!

https://350.org/tax-their-billions-dossier/

"It’s impossible to seriously fight climate change without a profound redistribution of wealth, both within countries and internationally.”

-THOMAS PIKETTY

Taxing socially and ecologically destructive wealth should be a no brainer. The urgent action needed to power the world with cheaper, cleaner renewable energy and reduce our energy use needs huge public investment, but governments in the Global North are failing to step up. Controversy over who foots the bill for climate action is happening in many countries around the world. Forcing the richest in society to pay through implementing wealth taxes is one of the clearest and most straightforward solutions to this problem. Not only could governments raise the trillions needed to act on the climate crisis, they would also help reduce wealth inequality between the richest and poorest

Continued…. As nations with clear anti-imperialist aims, they make no secret of seeking to break free from the neo-colonial stranglehold France has maintained over Francophone Africa for decades. ECOWAS, on the other hand, has proven to be a defunct institution that serves as little more than a mouthpiece and enforcement agency for French interests.

According to Samba Sylla, author of Africa’s Last Colonial Currency: The CFA Franc Story, '[France’s] capture of ECOWAS can be seen in the nature of the financial sanctions imposed on Mali in 2022 and Niger since the 2023 revolutionary putsch. No foreign country could order the central bank of a sovereign currency-issuer to prevent the government accessing its bank accounts and the domestic financial system.'

Given this context, why would the Sahel region regard ECOWAS as an ally of African people seeking liberation rather than a French-neo-colonial puppet?

Nurses and other professionals are leaving Africa amid worker shortages in their home countries. This is understandable, given they can earn far more abroad and send remittances home. But what is unforgivable is that African governments are not only failing to turn the tide by creating incentives to stay but, in some cases, actively encouraging workers to grab opportunities outside of Africa. Policies need to be rethought fast as the situation is extremely detrimental to Africans generally. We look at three cases: Ghana, Malawi and Kenya.
