Summer on the Polish-Belarusian border goes on.
Thousands of tourists, as every year, chose this region as their place of rest. At the same time, there are also people in the forests who have to fight for their lives - chased by Belarusian soldiers and hunted by Polish border guards. Although these two worlds are so close geographically, they are actually separated by a chasm, because the price of human life is extremely different.
In recent days, we have met people from Africa and the Middle East.
They will not remember the Białowieża Forest as a wonderful, primeval forest hiding immeasurable treasures of nature.
For them, forest hollows are obstacles on which they break their legs.
Dense virgin thickets are spines against which they cripple their bodies.
The forest swamps, which are the habitat of countless species of flora and fauna, are for them a treacherous trap in which they drown.
Every person you encounter is a threat. Threat of beatings, harassment, imprisonment, pushback.
We often forget what happens to these people. Let's not forget.
Let's remember another story, this time two people whom we recently had the opportunity to meet in the forest:
"In Belarus, near the border with Poland, a huge number of people are imprisoned. A large part are women with children. We, along with other men, were kept in a cramped room during the day. There were a dozen of us there. All day. Many people wanted to return to Minsk, but the Belarusian border guards did not allow it. They slapped us with dogs, I saw people with bite wounds on their faces. When we found ourselves on the Polish side, the Polish border guards tracked us down. Belarusians sometimes destroy our phones. Polish soldiers damage USB sockets - without the possibility of charging phones are useless. After they damaged our phones, they told us to undress, take off our pants and underwear. Then they sprayed each of us with pepper spray on our anus and genitals."
We can pretend that nothing is happening. After all, always in the history of the world someone has hurt the weaker. It is easy for us to condemn people who are indifferent to the evil that have happened in the past.
How will we deal with the present?
