Former coloniser France has suffered another loss in Niger after the Sahelian state's leaders reclaimed control of uranium mining from French nuclear giant Orano.

In a statement released on 4 December, Orano said Niger had taken control of Somaïr, a mining company that had operated the Arlit mine. Orano owns 63.4 per cent of Somaïr shares, while Niger's state-owned Sopamin holds 36.6 per cent. 

Since ousting Western-aligned president Mohamed Bazoum on 26 July 2023, Niger's leaders have been working to reclaim control over resources from former colonial ruler France. For over 50 years, France has been generating electricity from its nuclear power plants using uranium extracted from Niger. Niger also nationalised a French water company's operations following its contract ending almost a year ago.
