If corporations—legal fictions that can’t feel pain or love—can be granted personhood, why not whales, who sing, nurture, grieve, and navigate vast oceans with astonishing intelligence? Recognizing whales as legal persons isn’t about fantasy; it’s about justice. When a ship fatally injures a whale or a hunter kills a pregnant mother, there should be consequences. Indigenous leaders from the Pacific Islands are leading a powerful movement to make this real—pushing for laws that let humans stand up for whales in court.
