While Google typically publishes source code within 48 hours of a new release, this time it has been a week and there's no news about Android 16 QPR1 source code. This has created concern among custom ROM developers who rely on timely AOSP updates. And after removal of Bootloader Unlocking by various OEMs, news about sideloading being off the shelf, and this delayed release of source code, something's really concerning is going on in the Android ecosystem.. EU, in 2022, brought a new set of rules (delegated act 2022/30) that brought cybersecurity front and center. Known as RED's Cybersecurity Shift, it refers to the European Union's Radio Equipment Directive (RED) mandate.

As of August 2025, manufacturers selling devices in the EU need to:

-Block the installation of unauthorized software
-Use Secure Boot (or similar) to verify firmware authenticity
-Ensure only signed and approved ROMs can run

Moreover, RED's new requirement means:

-Every bit of firmware must be cryptographically signed
-Hardware and software must be validated together before startup
-Unapproved or altered ROMs are blocked by default

So don't be surprised if every OEM ends up removing OEM Unlocking and stops the Bootloader Unlocking process, atleast in Europe....
