The Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) has developed VERO →, a quadrupedal robot dog designed to tackle the world's second-worst litter problem: cigarette butts.

Cigarette butts, which account for over four trillion pieces of litter annually, release toxic chemicals into the environment. VERO, equipped with foot-mounted vacuums, autonomously locates and sucks up cigarette butts from beaches and other difficult terrains.

Developed in Claudio Semini’s lab at IIT, VERO uses an AlienGo platform from Unitree, with hoses connected from a vacuum on its back to each foot. The innovative design allows the robot to effectively clean areas where traditional wheeled robots cannot operate.
