A Strong CV = A Strong Application

In the maritime industry, your CV isn’t just a formality it’s your first impression. When companies are reviewing applications for roles like Technical Superintendent, Fleet Manager or Marine/HSEQ Superintendent, a well-structured CV can be the difference between getting an interview or being overlooked.

Having worked in maritime recruitment for years, I’ve heard of and seen too many great candidates missing out simply because their CV didn’t reflect their true capabilities. So, here are 5 expert-backed tips to make your application stand out:

Start with a clear summary – A 3-4 sentence professional profile at the top of your CV should highlight your key experience, vessel type expertise, and shore-based roles.
Be specific about your experience – Instead of just listing job noscripts, detail your responsibilities and achievements. What fleets have you managed? What improvements have you driven? Numbers and examples matter.
Make your CV easy to read – Avoid long paragraphs. Use bullet points to highlight your key skills and career milestones quickly. Hiring managers often scan CVs in less than 30 seconds.
Include relevant certifications & qualifications – Whether it’s Class 1 CoC, ISM/ISPS experience, Dry Docking expertise, or HSQE training, ensure these are clearly listed.
Tailor your CV to the role – If you're applying for a Technical Superintendent role in LNG, highlight your LNG experience first. One-size-fits-all CVs don’t work as well.

Your CV is your chance to showcase why you’re the right fit before you even speak to an employer.

Hoping some of the above may help some of my network who are searching for a role.

Personal Witness
Good day to all of my family members.

I share this testimony with humility and sincerity, for the glory of God alone, and with the hope that it may encourage anyone walking through deep personal trials.

I come from a family marked by profound brokenness. From a young age, I witnessed emotional pain, conflict, and abandonment. Like many, I fought inner battles—anger, bitterness, fear, and despair. Although I sincerely desired to live a righteous life, I learned through experience that human strength is insufficient. True transformation comes only through God’s grace and the power of the Holy Spirit.

My life has been shaped by hardship, sacrifice, and the responsibilities that come with them. I cared for my elderly mother during a severe illness after doctors said she would live only one week. By God’s grace, she lived for nine more years—eight of them in good health. During that time, I gave up a well-paying offshore career to care for her full-time. This decision cost me financially and professionally, but it gave me something far greater: obedience, peace, and purpose.

Throughout those years, I relied completely on faith—reading the Bible, praying daily, and trusting God even when there were no visible answers. I witnessed what I can only describe as a miracle: my mother’s recovery and her peaceful passing in her sleep on April 22, 2024.

God also restored me personally. After more than two decades of addiction and inner struggle, I was set free—not by my own effort, but by God’s grace. Today, I live with inner peace, integrity, and freedom.

I choose honesty over shortcuts, faith over fear, and truth over convenience, even in my professional life.
At 46 years of age, I believe my life is just beginning.

I am rebuilding my future with discipline, integrity, and faith. I share this testimony not to seek sympathy, but to offer hope—to remind others that no past is beyond redemption and no situation is too broken for God to restore.

If you are facing hardship, loss, or uncertainty, please remember this: transformation is possible, endurance has meaning, and integrity still matters.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.

With gratitude,

Madan John.
