The following two studies aim to assess the safety of maternal vaccination, looking at the health of infants born to mothers who were vaccinated (with Tdap or flu vaccine) during pregnancy.
The findings of these studies report that:
There is no increased risk of acute adverse events or adverse birth outcomes, and that there was no increased risk of infant hospitalization or death after vaccination in pregnancy.
🚫 However, prior to their analyses, the authors of these studies excluded the following from their data sets:
- All cases of birth defects.
- All cases of perinatal complications.
- All cases of pre-term birth before 34 weeks (influenza vaccine is recommended to be given at any time during pregnancy, and the Tdap vaccine has been recommended to be given between 27-36 weeks gestation).
- All cases of hospitalization or death of the infant during pregnancy or birth, including stillborn, spontaneous abortion, etc.

👆🏻The researchers who performed these analyses (who work at the CDC Immunization Safety Office and other health agencies), removed all data points where evidence of harm would most likely occur, then concluded vaccination in pregnancy is safe.
It is important to check for design flaws such as these. Risk assessment research cannot properly be conducted when the most important endpoints comprising evidence of risk, are excluded from the analysis.
