I forgot to mention this a while ago but. One thing I love about being alt is just seeing other alt people on the streets and they immediately smile at you when they recognize you’re also alt. You also like the same style they do. You listen to the same music they do. It’s so sad and comforting at the same time because I’ve walked the streets and got a smile for three alt girls in the span of a week.
It’s so sad because you realize they they smile at you BECAUSE you’re also like them. They won’t judge you because they’ve been judged. They’ve been bullied and called names, so when they see another alt person outside, it gives that immediate sense of comfort that hey, there’s someone else like me too!!
This is why representation is so important and also generally just… being kind. It pains me to know they’ve experienced the same bullying and name calling as I have simply due to the way I dress and style my hair and decorate and design things for myself. No one deserves to be bullied for their style, sense of fashion or appearance. No one deserves to only feel safe with the ones who look like them.
