Btw if yall don’t know what Schopenhauerian Pessimism is, it’s the belief that life is fundamentally suffering, driven by a blind, insatiable "Will" to desire and strive, with happiness being merely a temporary absence of pain, not a positive state. Its based off of four core beliefs:

- The Will. It’s explained that the universe drives on a force called “Will” which manifests the urge to live and desire in all beings.

- Suffering. Suffering is a primary thing in life and its constant. Pleasure however is never constant and its fleeting, so life swings between misery and boredom.

- No intrinsic meaning. Life has no meaning or ultimate purpose beyond “the will” aka our will. We shape our lives. But due to our will and how blindly we follow it, it often leads to the conclusion that non-existence is better than living at all.

- Compassion and ethics. Despite leaning onto the principle that life is created more of misery, it’s also showing that you should show empathy and foster compassion and still harbour some genuine morality.

It’s basically all the cores of pessimism but it also calls to have morality and empathy for other people’s sufferings.

“All willing springs from lack, from deficiency, and thus from suffering. Fulfillment brings this to an end; yet for one wish that is fulfilled there remain at least ten that are denied. Further, desiring lasts a long time, demands and requests go on to infinity, fulfillment is short and meted out sparingly. But even the final satisfaction itself is only apparent; the wish fulfilled at once makes way for a new one; the former is a known delusion, the latter not as yet known. No attained object of willing can give satisfaction that lasts and no longer declines…Therefore, so long as our consciousness is filled by our will, so long as we are given up to the throng of desires with its constant hopes and fears, so long as we are the subject of willing, we never obtain lasting happiness or peace…” -Schopenhauer.

(1) The will is the essence of life.

(2) To will something is to experience a lack or deficiency and thus to suffer (i.e. willing entails suffering).

(3) It is impossible to fully and finally satisfy the will.

(4) Therefore, to be alive is to suffer, continuously.

Now why this for Mikage? Why not other philosophies like Nihilism? Well, she does have a small aspect of Nihilism but she’s leaning more towards Existentialism and Schopenhauerian pessimism.

Her life IS based off of suffering. She’s never been one to dwell too long in joy because she’s never gotten it. Therefore, she fits his claim “to live is to suffer”, because existence in itself is driven by a Will that never stops wanting more. And she’s constantly getting fucked up by these wills. Either from herself or someone else. It’s structured in her addiction, self loathing, exploitive systems and emotional neglect. She never expects anything good to happen because she knows it’s never going to last - which fits w the theory.

Now, back to the will that I mentioned, as Schopen said, The Will is a blind force that drives humans into doing things to fuel themselves. To consume. To hold desire for more. And to get drained from it yet repeat because it’s a cycle. That’s what she does - it’s either her substance use or other patterns. She knows it’s bad for her. She knows it empties her out, yet she does it anyways. It’s not like she doesn’t know what she’s doing - quite the opposite. She’s aware of the hurt she’s bringing herself and potentially others, but her WANT never ends. She’s letting the will lead her on.

Ntm, Schopenhauer believes that being conscious of your own suffering is a pain within itself and amplifies your misery. Like when you see an animal suffering and you KNOW it suffering and it makes you depressed.

Mikage knows what she is. She thinks she’s dirty, she knows she’s being used, she knows she’s unlovable and disposable and she knows she’s never good enough for anything. She internalises it all and lives on knowing all of it.
