Said Kumbi-a-Wadesa, chairman of the Pokomo tribal council that once derived great power from an awe-inspiring drum called the Ngadji, died this year in April. He never saw the Ngadji because a British officer stole it at gunpoint. It has sat in a storeroom @britishmuseum for 113 years.
“The white man took not just the Ngadji but brought many changes to our society," he said when we met in 2019.
Its theft was an act of subjugation that fractured Pokomo society, and now the added indignity of @britishmuseum refusing to return it even though it sits in a closet.
Kumbi-a-Wadesa had gone blind & knew he'd never glimpse the 3m-tall Ngadji. But it was the Ngadji's roaring boom that gave it God-like power, legend has it, and he held onto hope he'd hear it one day.
“Those who aren’t blind will see it, but I will know that particular sound.”
