there's a serious issue in Singapore happening regarding trans rights and a rape case. the victim got targeted by a stalker, and is at the hands of a judge who sending her back to the hospital where her assault happened. my activist friends in sg are fighting for this.

this is important bc protesting is illegal in Singapore. Yet there is a concerning ongoing situation which has spurred TWO protests within just two weeks. The last time a major protest happened was over two years ago in 2021.

Early on the morning of 5 May 2023 outside the State Courts of Singapore, and again today in the afternoon of 18 May 2023 below the Attorney-General's Chambers, some concerned citizens protested in support of Harvey – a trans woman who was raped in 2014 at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) in Singapore, and has not seen justice since.

Harvey was remanded to IMH on 5 May 2023. This means that she was institutionalised at the same place where she, as a trans woman, had been put in a male ward and subsequently raped in 2014. Trans women do not often make it out of such institutionalisation alive, or they commit suicide shortly after being discharged. It is a deeply traumatising experience to be institutionalised, and even more so if the place you might be sent to is the same place you were previously raped at. Local news reports on the arraignment repeatedly misgendered her and Harvey is not recognised as a trans woman by IMH or the State Courts, and is at risk of being sent to male wards/cells. Her friends spoke to her on 7 May as she was only allowed 15 min calls once a week. She sounded distraught and asked for prayers for her wellbeing and resilience.

Harvey was subsequently released on bail on 12 May 2023, upon IMH realising that she is not actually a danger to herself or others. However, her release was conditional on draconian bail terms: In particular, she was legally ordered to delete all her social media accounts and never access them again. Accounts run not by Harvey, but by her friends and allies, or even total strangers in support of her, such as https://www.instagram.com/justice4harvey/ and https://twitter.com/Safety4Harvey, are at risk of being legally shut down too. If these accounts are not deleted, Harvey will be seen to have violated her bail terms, and thus be immediately remanded to prison.

Moreover, the judge presiding over Harvey's case has a clear conflict of interest in this case as he has a contentious personal history with Harvey that dates back over a decade. He presided over two bomb hoax allegations in 2013 and 2014 that Harvey was framed for and subsequently cleared of in 2015 (as she had not committed them). He was also the judge who sent her to IMH in 2014, where she ended up getting rape. He also has a police report filed against her.
