Imbolc is an ancient Celtic festival celebrated around February 1st, marking the halfway point between the winter solstice and spring equinox, symbolizing the first stirrings of spring, fertility, and purification, and honoring the goddess Brigid. Celebrations involve fire rituals like candle lighting and bonfires, spring cleaning and decluttering, making Brigid's crosses, feasting on dairy and hearty foods, and setting intentions for new projects as the earth awakens.

I know I haven’t been uploading artwork of late due to aforementioned changes in my life (big ones) which, unfortunately, is requiring me to travel extensively - especially within the next 2 weeks. I can’t say what’s going on at the moment because it’s confidential. So, for the next couple of weeks, my art will more-or-less come to a standstill. Hopefully, it will pick up again when all is said and done. 😁

The Kitchen Witch

Perhaps you've heard of the tradition of The Kitchen Witch? You may even have had one while growing up? Maybe her joyously cackling bewarted face looks out at you even now as you drink your morning coffee or eat your evening meal.

The Kitchen Witch finds her origins in Germania -Or Perhaps Scandinavia, Traditions have a tendency to be disputed in their origins- She is a common doll of a flying witch that is meant to bring good luck to the kitchen. She keeps pots from boiling over, makes sure spices are perfectly mixed, prevents kitchen disasters and in general makes the kitchen a happier place to be. So where did she come from?

Witches have historically been used as a catch all for everything from everyday heathens through to Ghosts and Gods. The Kitchen Witch may be a remainder of venerating Grandmother Holda, the Matron of the Home and Community -and known for her absolutely excellent cooking including Jams and Pancakes which she will throw at you, you will eat those Pancakes Johann whether you like it or not!- but more likely it is yet another obscure ancestral idol akin to the Nutcracker or House Gnomes that have stuck around over the centuries. Except in this case it is specifically an idol to feminine ancestral spirits sometimes called "Fairy Godmothers".

I mean who else is going to keep you from burning the house down or butchering the family recipes better than Grandma herself!
