Final Update: dad watching GoT for first time
I have previously posted about my dad watching GoT for the first time as he has had some time off work. He is in his 60s, not on social media and has had zero spoilers prior and throughout his watch. He has now finished! So here are his thoughts.
My previous post:
Season 1-5 https://www.reddit.com/r/gameofthrones/s/RfQ35tOW1A
My dads thoughts on 5-8 and ending:
- He wasnt really a fan of the fact that Jon Snow died then was brought back to life, he thought it was a bit too much. But he also prefixed this with the fact that there are white walkers and dragons so anything is possible.
- He enjoyed the battle of the bastards, which was obvious as he is an action type man and he was desperate to see Ramsey get killed and said it was poetic justice that his own hounds finished the job.
- He hated the sparrows more than Cercei for some reason, they really annoyed him and was happy with the Sept being blown up 😅
- He was bored with the many faced god storyline and admitted to running them bits forward sometimes, I explained that they were fleshing out Aryas character but it wasnt exciting enough for him.
- Again, noticing lots of famous faces, old actors that he enjoys in other shows. But he eye rolled at Ed Sheerans cameo🤣 he said 'was it that popular in its day that famous people were flinging themselves at it for a scene?' I said yes.
- He rejoiced at the hound being alive! He remained his favourite character and said he wished that he could have found some peace at the end but I reminded him that he got his final revenge.
- He had no comments on the Hodor scene 😳 I asked him if he was shocked that poor Hodor is the way he is through Bran and he said not really, everyone has their role and that was Hodors. This was dissapointing for me.
- During season 7 he predicted that Dany was going to become mad, he said little things have happened throughout that shows she wants power and that she has mentioned burning people a couple times already, and asked does she end up burning everyone? I didnt tell him obviously.
- He enjoyed the run up to the long night where everyone is getting ready and felt like it really built some tension but he said he couldn't see the battle because it was too dark (no shit!) I told him thats a regular complaint.
- He thought Jon would have killed the night king, I told him at the end that they didnt want Jon to keep being a hero, he said Arya killing him was a nice touch since they built her to be a little bad ass and constantly out to avenge her family.
- He said Theon had such a good redemption arc but he was still glad he got killed 😅.
Last two eps/ending:
- At the end he said what was the point in the Jon Snow / Targaryan storyline, he thought Jon would end up king. He said all it did was make him feel uncomfortable that he was knocking boots with his aunt 😅 (I had to explain how they were aunt/nephew because he was a bit confused about the Targaryan family tree).
- He said, why was Tyrion keep making the wrong judgements? I said 'bad writing'.
- She burns the city, predicted! He said hes glad Jon killed her because she turned into a mad woman like her father, I said yes that was the point haha. I asked him if he thought they'd rushed her madness and he said no, she was mad the whole time just people in Essos loved her so she didnt unleash it yet.
- He said Cercei should of had a better death scene, he said her death was not a reflection on her character and seemed a bit anticlimactic.
- Bran the Broken, he said he is happy about the ending, everyone he thought would die did and who he wanted to live did (apart from the hound). He said he was happy that Bran was made king because that was the whole aim of the story, he said that Bran being king broke the wheel they kept talking about and enjoyed the final council meeting scene. He said Jon Snow would be happy with the wildlings and it is where he is best suited, and with Tormund.
All in all, he really enjoyed it, he sees the hype now but said he'll never watch it again though,

Would the outcome have been different if Rhaegar had switched places with Arthur Dayne?
