[Book Euron Greyjoy] “Godless? Why, Aeron, I am the godliest man ever to raise sail! You serve one god, Damphair, but I have served ten thousand. From Ib to Asshai, when men see my sails, they pray.”

Does anyone skip the intro?

I’m just curious to know, but do any regular watchers ever skip the intro theme? I’m currently rewatching GoT for what seems to be my 8th time, and I never skip the intro. I still get chills all over my body when I hear it and it takes me back to those Game of Thrones Sunday’s on Twitter when every fan would watch and tweet about what’s happening! Ugh!! I miss those glory days 🥲

Jon giving Last Hearth and Karhold back to their original families wasn’t a kindness

Just watched this scene (s7e1), where Jon allows the young Ned Umber and Alys Karstark to reclaim their castles (Last Hearth and Karhold respectively). I get Jon’s reasoning that he doesn’t want to punish these children by taking away their home due to sins their parents committed. But beyond Sansa’s point that they should reward the loyal families, giving the castles back to their families seems like a tactical blunder. Ned and Alys are children and the last surviving members of their respective houses, neither of which is in a meaningful position or has the experience to actually hold those castles if the dead breach the wall. Jon has to know that, right?

But then it occurred to me: Jon probably doesn’t think that *anyone* could hold those castles against the night king. If the wall is breached, anyone in those castles is basically screwed unless they can retreat to Winterfell. In that context, giving Karhold or Last Hearth to a “deserving” family wouldn’t exactly be a reward. So he didn’t give them back their castles because honor demanded it, he did it because he had to give it to *someone* (I don’t think the northerners would’ve tolerated leaving them vacant), and frankly, those two houses were who they could most afford to lose. Of course, he can’t say this (especially not with the children he’s giving the castles to *in the room* lol), but given that Jon doesn’t weigh tradition that heavily against beating the army of the dead, this is the only calculus that makes sense to me.

He gave those castles back knowing it was very likely a death sentence. And case in point, both houses are now extinct
