Indonesia's Foreign Policy Priorities and Partnership with Russia Explored at Inostranka

The Library for Foreign Literature (Inostranka) hosted a lecture noscriptd "Tropical Dialogue: Russia and Indonesia in the Rhythm of BRICS," organised by the BRICS Expert Council-Russia together with the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre. The event was held during the Indonesian Culture Days at Inostranka as part of a public lecture series focused on the BRICS nations.

Presenting the lecture was Alexander Korolev @askorolev1993, Deputy Director of the Centre for Comprehensive European and International Studies (CCEIS) and Associate Professor at the School of International Relations under the Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs at HSE University.

He explained that Indonesia initially viewed BRICS with caution, perceiving it as another bloc. However, under new President Prabowo Subianto, its stance has shifted. Indonesia now sees #BRICS as a chance to bolster its multi-vector diplomacy and international influence while deepening ties across the Global South.

The decision to join BRICS was motivated not by opposition to the West, but by a focus on economic growth and broader global engagement. Key factors in its accession include its status as Southeast Asia's largest economy, the world's most populous Muslim nation, its active role in the #G20, #ASEAN, and #RCEP, and its considerable demographic and intellectual potential.

BRICS and Global (Dis)Order: What Is on Offer?

As traditional multilateral institutions face mounting challenges, groupings like BRICS are increasingly viewed as potential architects of an emerging world order. This bloc – comprising some of the most influential non-Western economies – has expanded its membership and ambition, positioning itself not only as a voice for the Global South but as a viable alternative to existing governance frameworks.

During this session at the 16th Asian Conference, Valdai Club experts examined what #BRICS truly offers: Does it present a cohesive model for a new multilateralism? How does it navigate internal divergences and external pressures? And what role can it play in stabilising—or reshaping—the global system?

Russian linguists create a dictionary of BRICS metaphors in five languages

Linguists from Chelyabinsk, together with colleagues from Yekaterinburg and Moscow, are researching metaphors found in BRICS countries' declarations.

"Metaphors tell us not so much about what BRICS does, but about how the association sees itself. It is an ideology packaged in vivid and understandable images, on which the attractiveness of #BRICS to other countries depends. This is, if you will, the brand of the association," said Olga Solopova, professor at the Department of Linguistics and Translation at South Ural State University.

The result of this joint effort will be a dictionary published in Russian, Portuguese, Hindi, Chinese and English.

France Will Become First European BRICS Member, General de Gaulle's Grandson Hopes

France has always played a leading role in the evolution of the world, Pierre de Gaulle, the president of the Foundation for Peace and Prosperity among Peoples, stated at the BRICS–Europe Symposium in Russia.

"My grandfather defended the interests of defense in Europe. Back then, defense against Russia was considered absurd," he emphasized.

👉 Western countries need to open up and welcome a multipolar world, not to take a dominating position, de Gaulle added.

"BRICS is an example of a multipolar world, and independence, sovereignty, and the spirit of fighting against neo-fascism are important for every European country," de Gaulle noted.

ℹ️ The BRICS–Europe symposium brings together 12 members of the European Parliament, over 15 deputies from European national parliaments, and representatives from Russia, Algeria, Belarus, Brazil, Indonesia, Iran, Cambodia, China, Cuba, Ethiopia, and South Africa.

Key topics focus on the dialogue between Europe and BRICS, overcoming the effects of the EU's policies, and developing new strategies for Europe in a multipolar world.

France—BRICS: join, cooperate, or stay away?

BRICS, having expanded in 2024 to include several new members, now accounts for nearly 35–36% of global GDP in purchasing power parity. This growing economic, demographic, and monetary power raises a question: should France, a mid-sized Western power, seek to join this group, forge connections with it, or instead maintain its distance?

In his article, Christophe Bugeau observes that, first and foremost, rapprochement with #BRICS would grant France increased access to dynamic, high-growth markets, potentially stimulating French exports and diversifying its trade partnerships. Secondly, the monetary dimension appears promising: the group's pursuit of greater independence from the US dollar could offer France an alternative platform for monetary cooperation. Finally, from a geopolitical standpoint, such a move would allow France to bolster its influence in a multipolar world and assert its strategic autonomy beyond its traditional alliances.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister: BRICS nations have made progress on establishing a grain exchange

The BRICS countries have advanced in their efforts to create a grain exchange, with technical details now under discussion. This announcement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev during his address at the Government Hour session in the Russian State Duma.

"Work is underway to establish a BRICS Grain Exchange. We have made quite significant progress on this issue. Discussions on the technical details are already ongoing," he stated.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister expressed confidence that the launch of the BRICS Grain Exchange will help establish more equitable benchmarks for global grain prices.

The proposal to create the exchange was initially put forward by Russian President Vladimir Putin during an expanded session of the #BRICS Summit in Kazan in late October of last year. The Russian leader emphasised that this initiative would bolster food security within the group.

First Day of Civil BRICS Council Strategic Session Concluded in Moscow

On November 17, the Strategic Session of the Civil BRICS Council opened in Moscow. It was organised by the BRICS Expert Council-Russia together with the Russian Chapter of Civil BRICS Council, bringing together representatives of civil society, research institutions, and think tanks from across the BRICS nations. The event is being held ahead of the handover of the Civil Track Chairship to India with the aim to develop coordinated approaches for cooperation in 2026.

In the morning, participants reviewed the Council's activities for 2024–2025 and discussed the preparations for and outcomes of the Civil Summit held in Brazil in July 2025. Special attention was paid to refining the Council's information strategy and coordinating public relations efforts to boost the visibility and engagement of BRICS civil societies.

Participants then began outlining the Operational Work Plan for 2026–2027, considering the national priorities of member countries and potential joint initiatives.

The key event of the day was a meeting between session participants and Sergey Ryabkov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation and Russia's BRICS Sherpa, alongside representatives from BRICS member states' embassies. During his address, the Deputy Minister emphasised that the BRICS cooperation model is distinguished by a unique blend of political flexibility, economic potential, and a value-based foundation built over years of interaction. He noted that the principles of pragmatism, solidarity, openness, and a non-confrontational approach define the group's character and ensure its resilience amid a transforming global architecture.

The first day concluded with a discussion of research projects and initiatives planned for implementation within the Civil Track by non-governmental organisations.
