Today Melissa Lewis over on BlueSky pointed out that the font used nin the infamous "You wouldn't steal a car" anti-piracy campaign was actually designed by Just van Rossum, whose brother, Guido, created the Python programming language (bsky.app/profile/melissa.news/post/3ln7hx5rhcj2v)

She also pointed out that the font had been cloned and released illegally for free under the name "XBAND Rough". Naturally, it would be hilarious if the anti-piracy campaign actually turned out to have used this pirated font, so I went sleuthing and quickly found a PDF from the campaign site with the font embedded (web.archive.org/web/20051223202935/http://www.piracyisacrime.com:80/press/pdfs/150605_8PP_brochure.pdf).

So I chucked it into FontForge and yep, turns out the campaign used a pirated font the entire time!
🎮 Today, we filed a complaint against the video game company Ubisoft!

👉 Ubisoft forces its customers to connect to the internet when they launch a single-player game, which allows it to collect their gaming behaviour.

@signalapp@mastodon.world As a supporter of #Signal, it is important to point out a key detail: Signal's own code is #OpenSource, but Signal uses multiple #proprietary libraries from #Google. Those cannot be scrutinized since the source code is not open. We believe Signal should offer an actual open source version, and are ready to help. This exists already in the fork @MollyIM@fosstodon.org Also, apps like #Element #Threema #Wire are #FOSS, and have #ReproducibleBuilds on fdroidorg@floss.social #FDroid

Surprising to see Youtuber PewDiePie (110M subscribers) publishing a video last night , "I installed Linux (so should you)" with a call to his community to join the platform, underlining the fun of customisation and DIY, in opposition to all the enshitification of Windows. His main point of friction for moving was Photoshop, and he explained how he made the effort to adapt GIMP to his needs. Always good to see initiatives like that shared to large audience.

yup. The downsides of Linux are, at most, equivalent to the downsides of using windows (as far as annoyance factor) and after using Linux for even a few weeks, well, going back to windows is.... horrible.

Anyone that isn't forced to use Microsoft products should not be using Windows; It's just a better experience to not.

WANTED: Intel Architecture Labs 1990’s CD-ROM’s. They appear to have maybe been monthly. They contained a mirror of Intel’s ‘download.intel.com’ ftp server, specifically the /ial/ subdirectory which is not in the 2014 backup of the site on archive.org.

Lots and lots of white papers and design guideline documents in there. Especially looking for ones from the late 1990’s (1998-ish onward) if they exist. I’ve seen references in mailing lists to them that lead me to believe they do.

Example gem: intel trying to cover its ass after the FDIV bug, and have some more FDIV

As we all know, forums are clearly superior to Discord servers & we should go back to the days when it was easy to find information that definitely won't succumb to data rot. That's why I've put together this helpful guide in the form of an image to help you get started.

how thoughtful of them to make this checked off by default.

Planning to read the document in its entirety, but based on the overview, the ruling against Apple appears to be a MASSIVE victory against their anticompetitive practices and their stranglehold over apps. It is very long overdue for them to face consequences, including potential criminal contempt.

EDIT: Analysis of the ruling in the thread. It's great news. Do not piss off your judge. 🧵

Congratulations to Apple for playing themselves. There was no world where the judge was going to be cool with them showing super obvious contempt for the court’s orders. The fines are piling up. Maybe you should do something to stop them coming, rather than wasting your cash reserves for no benefit. https://www.theverge.com/news/659246/apple-epic-app-store-judge-ruling-control
