GrapheneOS based on Android 16 has been through extensive public Alpha/Beta testing and should reach our Stable channel today. We'll continue fixing various upstream Android 16 regressions such as the back button issue impacting the stock Pixel OS we fixed in our latest release.

Related to recent replies - I'm really sick of the bullshit 'protect the user from themselves' culture of tech hardware, especially from what I see in the US and Canada.

Also, not having a no-OS option on pre-built computers and laptops is total bullshit. That licensing has a non-zero cost, and is totally unnecessary a lot of the time when folks either image with a different Windows license (Pro, Enterprise, etc), or re-install with Linux, BSD, etc.

Like I said in the thread I was replying to, vendors concerned about unhappy customers choosing the wrong option is nothing new, and certainly not exclusive to OS (or lack thereof) choice. No doubt there's been heavy lobbying going on in US/Canada to keep it this way.

I would go so far as to say that mobile devices like Apple hardware, smartphones, tablets, etc should give you some sort of choice in your OS on first-boot. If Apple has been able to embed a WiFi-capable OS recovery for nearly a decade, I'm sure other devices are capable of following suit with something similar and/or customizable.

Robert Braxman has published another video spreading blatant misinformation about GrapheneOS in order to promote his highly insecure products and services. In addition to many false technical claims and fabrications about our team, he's falsely claiming the project is dying.

@thestrangelet@beige.party My worry is what happens when people adjust their expectations across the board such that "copious slop" is the standard people expect: working above that standard is great, of course, but doesn't help once a critical mass of people are doing it. I wrote a blog post about exactly this recently - I hope we don't get to that point, but I fear we might :/

We released Krita 5.2.10 yesterday. The MacOS store version is being held up, though, because apparently now any link to any website, like krita.org, that contains a donation button is forbidden...

We're seeing a lot of initiatives across Europe and the EU to replace Microsoft services with #Linux and #OpenSource solutions.

This could be massive for Linux and the entire community, so I'm sharing my thoughts on why this is happening, why it's great, but also why it could still very much die down very quickly:

A strong statement of resistance to the relentless marketing of "AI" in education spaces. I encourage all educators to have a look and consider signing on:

One more time for the people in the back: every conversation about "AI" should begin and end with its environmental impacts:

"We tend to think of the cloud as something invisible - floating above us in the digital ether. But the reality is very physical.

The cloud lives in over 10,000 data centres around the world, most of them located in the US, followed by the UK and Germany.

Many centres use evaporative cooling systems, where water absorbs heat and evaporates - similar to how sweat wicks away heat from our bodies. On hot days, a single facility can use millions of gallons.

One study estimates that AI-driven data centres could consume 1.7 trillion gallons of water globally by 2027."

Oh no…now Meta is automatically sharing our private messages to its AI. As far as I can tell, you can only turn it off for each message thread, one at a time (and there seems to be no option to turn it off *at all* for group threads!). Yet another privacy disaster from Facebook.

I use Messenger btw for family and non-tech friends, so don’t (ahem) shoot the messenger.

Please report any account that tells you that you need to verify your #Mastodon account to continue using it through a private message. It is a scam. We do not require identity verification. Real staff accounts either have a special role badge on their profile or are verified through the joinmastodon.org domain and will typically never reach out through private messages.
