This is a Dystopian timeline: My wife was let go after 25 years working for the same bank this morning. In an apparent oops, the bank's IT department hard wiped ALL her IOS devices remotely, while she was on the road driving, relying on the GPS function.
The screw you cherry on top? Our apartment building in its infinite wisdom a couple years back switched all building locks to the Latch app.
So she was LOCKED OUT OF OUR HOUSE.
Oh, and the Latch maintained intercom at our front door is out of order.
Thanks for that. Sheesh.

I have never liked #Signal, being centralized is enough for me to consider it not an option at all, enshittification is bound to happen to any centralized service, and this doesn't sound good already:
"Signal just rolled out centralized backups, and the guy who announced it has quite the resume. Jim O'Leary, Signal's VP of Engineering since 2019, spent the previous eight years building surveillance infrastructure at Twitter and Facebook."

This site does considerably better than just asking "Is this the year of the Linux Desktop?".
It lists and breaks down the current status of major software support in Linux, so you can decide whether the switch is right for you at the current moment, as well as a guide to help you make an informed choice on distro and know what else you might be getting into.

man when people were telling me that smart TVs are a privacy nightmare, I thought that was because they recorded what you watched using their built in media-player OS.
NOPE! Apparently Roku TV's will give you popups based on what DVDs you're watching through them, because they screenshot the HDMI-in and compare it to a database.
that's a few steps creepier than I was expecting from a garden variety privacy invasion

Somehow I got involved with some coworkers at lunch and the discussion came down to someone saying "Bill Gates is one of the richest people alive and he controls all the technology. They're going to be building a T-1000 with those AI of theirs." Then someone else immediately says to him. "All of these rich people are the same. Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Elon Musk, they don't care about us."
Bill Gates doesn't get involved in Microsoft anymore, because he's too busy playing with the World Health Organization to shape healthcare in favor of his investments (even though 10% of WHO isn't a whole lot). Steve Ballmer isn't going to destroy Linux anymore, he's too busy with the Lakers. Meanwhile, Satya Nadella knows Linux makes him lots of money and HE was the one to boost it in Microsoft.
Put me in coach! My conspiracies about the "readiness™" of Apple products based on the editing of their events is more legitimate than what people cook up without understanding the industry. You know they're toast this year when they have an event where the camera wandered every few seconds, no AI offerings, made a thin phone with "all day battery life" then immediately told people to buy a MagSafe less than a minute later, obsoleted their C1 modem from the iPhone 16e for the N series modems, and wasted time bragging about removing the SIM tray even though they did that years ago to pad for time.

> We'll pool some revenue and dole it out to you based on how valuable we decide it is. How do we decide how valuable it is? Shut up and trust us. It's the Spotify model for the entirety of the internet.
If it's not clear enough, “the Spotify model” is not a good one.

Often when our list of Adobe alternatives is shared people comment that it's okay to pirate Adobe software. It's not, because that still supports Adobe through usage and staying in their ecosystem. Instead, do look into alternatives!
