while working on the win10 -> gnome a4 for the halifax #endof10 event, i installed microsoft edge from flathub because... i dunno, it's there and why not, i guess.

are all microsoft products this obnoxious? it really rivals google for shitty user interfaces. it started with the world's slowest full-screen animation to say "Hi." and then proceeded to force me to click through a dozen things telling me about how good it is at "ai" before i got to the browser part.

totally bananas.

The more time passes, the more aggressive #YouTube gets with third party clients (see @FreeTube@fosstodon.org having to make new workarounds every month or so and see the dozens of dead @invidious@social.tchncs.de / Piped instances) and downloaders. As a viewer, it's probably best to start archiving channels you care about offline. As a YouTuber, it's probably best to start mirroring your videos elsewhere, like on @peertube@framapiaf.org and Odysee.

More realistic and holistic take on switching from Windows to Linux.

One "lifestyle change" for me was actually instead of finding the perfect "Lightroom alternative" on Linux for hobby photography (tho LR did run OK in a Windows VM), was to just get better at taking photos without the need to edit them. Likewise, get better at recording video in one take, doing away with the need to edit it in Adobe.

Being fine with imperfection too. Also saves time.

I want to remind all of you that you're going to meet people who say they'll switch to Linux once 10 goes eol

Microsoft can extend this lifeline all they want, but they will eventually end it

What's going to happen to all your friends you let stay on 10 until the day it went eol, is they will be woefully unprepared to switch to Linux as their daily driver

You can crack the windows 10 security updates with massgrave, it's as trivial as activating windows these days

But thats not the takeaway you need to get from this, that you have time

You're out of time. You need to switch now while you aren't being forced to so you can iron out any bugs, find the best distro for you, and find ethical alternatives to proprietary software.
