PSA: Do not buy FuriLabs phone! Ask for a refund if you have ordered one.

FuriLabs advertises their phone as "transparency, freedom, and full control". This phone runs a custom fork of Mobian GNU/Linux called FuriOS.

Recently in their Matrix/Telegram group chat I had to witness that a contributor asking for the source code of their custom version of Andromeda, so that they could upstream the changes, but this request was denied by FuriLabs team member Barry.

This team member made up bullshit excuses as "it would take too much time" and saying extremely dismissive statements like "you can complain about it, but that won't change anything." and he called the important act providing the source code "low priority community stuff" and that they are more focused on making "money money money" (literal quote) right now.

Needless to say refusing to share source code and actively putting roadblocks and arguing with community members who only want to contribute should not be "low priority community stuff".

Considering that it just turned out that the source code of their Andromeda fork is proprietary that also makes me wonder what other software shipped on their phone is going to be proprietary.

Anyway this contributor -rightfully not being happy with the answer- continued the conversation. Eventually this contributor asked for a refund on the phone and FuriLabs member Wayne immediately banned them from the group chat. (They did approve the refund request though)

At this point I jumped into the conversation calling this sort of behavior extremely toxic and that I also find it extremely important that all source code is available.

This resulted in another in Wayne replying to me dismissively as well, making up excuses such as "We already have 100 repositories publicly available, 1 more isn't going to help you".

To be clear, I'm not asking for unreasonable things they can't even provide, such as source code for things the wireless modems or whatever.

We are only asking for the source code of existing free software projects that they modified.

Andromeda is licensed Apache 2.0 so yes they are technically allowed to make a proprietary fork, but if you're going to needlessly make proprietary forks, you really shouldn't advertise your phone as respecting freedom on your website.

This is against the spirit of freedom and especially terrible considering that FuriLabs was also allowed to have a stand to sell their phones at FOSDEM earlier this year.

Team member Barry eventually unbanned the contributor in question, but said "for anyone not aligning with our mission, there is always the option to part ways", which obviously prompted me to ask what their mission really is and if providing a phone with freedom and transparency is part of that mission.

They refused to answer this very simple question, and instead opted to also gave me a refund on the phone...

What an absolute disgrace, I hope they won't be allowed to show up at FOSDEM next year.

It seems many AI companies can't find a way to generate enough profits with users, so they're going for government contracts now.

This is part of the lobbying behind Chat Control in the EU, and ICE's mass surveillance systems in the US. Someone is making lots of money out of this.

Technology is never neutral.

And this technology with its lobbyists is doing a lot of damage right now.

Only the people can stop this.

Make your voice heard.

At our last MGM, we approved paying for legal advice about the UK's Online Safety Act. While we can afford this bill… it is just one bill. Laws like this are multiplying. So as awkward as this is, we are asking for help. See https://libera.chat/news/advice for more context.
i've been thinking about code of conduct committees a lot recently, and i'm increasingly of the opinion that @thelinuxEXP@mastodon.social has the right idea here:

https://youtu.be/iMqpm2Ahmt0?t=1181

how on earth is cocc/mod behaviour less transparent than full-blown court proceedings in cases where the effects are devastating to someone's career or mental well-being?

a lot of people make a *really* big deal out of code of conduct training, as if a weekend seminar (or, god forbid, a 4-hour workshop) were somehow tantamount to a law degree. it isn't. when shit gets serious, real lawyers and police get involved.

lawyers and police have real accountability.

it's very weird to me that so many free software projects have somehow allowed themselves to install a self-appointed judge dredd. of *course* that's going to be full of bias and inevitably weaponized.

codes of conduct are essential. but self-appointed committees need to be rethought or the nixos situation will just keep happening.

p.p.s. The server mastodon.social is NOT a good place to sign up, for many different reasons (more info here: https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server).

If you just want one alternative, https://mas.to is a much better option. It's reliable and has been online since 2019, and doesn't suffer from the problems of mastodon.social.

If you want to choose from a wide selection of servers, there are human curated lists of well-run reliable servers at https://fedi.garden and https://joinmastodon.org/servers
🇮🇹 Italy remains UNDECIDED, but is leaning towards SUPPORTING Chat Control despite clear conflicts with constitutional guarantees on privacy and the secrecy of correspondence.

If you are Italian, consider contacting your national parliament members via https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ !
If you are 🇩🇪 German, you can now call many of your Bundestag members directly via https://fightchatcontrol.eu/ by clicking the "Call" button!
Reading though a thread on KDE looking outdated and I think Nate sums up the entire thread quite well https://discuss.kde.org/t/does-kde-need-to-hire-professional-designers-ui-looks-outdated/39966

To #Bluesky Users With Dormant Mastodon Accounts 🙋‍♂️

Come on back. Please give Mastodon another try.

Maybe you created an account a couple years ago, but you found the technology too clunky, people too bossy, or engagement too limited.

It's changed. Solid technology, 500 character posts, Edits and Quote-Posts. With your help we can build a powerful truly decentralized public social media counterweight to centralized corporate media.
