Musicians are starting to organize boycott of Spotify, mainly about how it doesn't pay most musicians. But they don't seem to recognize the injustice Spotify does to every listener: such as making them identify themselves (by payment systems) and imposing DRM. I won't submit to those injustices, so I have never used Spotify and never will. Out,
I dream of a flip phone that can run postmarketOS and make calls over Wi-Fi and Jabber.

Why? Because flip phones aren't expected to be a place where you run "apps." If you say "I have a flip phone," your bank won't hassle you to get the app anymore.

postmarketOS does have some support for feature phones. It can run on the devices that come with KaiOS.

Now is another great moment to ponder if making your business rely on Amazon is a great idea.

Nah, my cloud (which is a 20 y.o. Mac Mini sitting on top of a bookcase) is fine.

It's just a pun on Signal being a secure messenger, but relying on third-party infrastructure.

Nothing wrong with relying on others' infrastructure per-se, I'm not one of those full-on paranoid types — but the founders of Signal probably are. I mean, now that they have added a third "post-quantum" ratchet, the data is resistant to being brute forced by quantum computers: https://it.slashdot.org/story/25/10/19/0546205/why-signals-post-quantum-makeover-is-an-amazing-engineering-achievement

But this improvement itself assumes that earlier data IS vulnerable to store now, decrypt later attacks — from this POV using AWS is an awful practice, so relying on others' infra is bad according to them, not me 🙃

With the AWS outage, now‘s as good a time as any to repost this old strip

Sooo I guess at this point it's just literally the old background blur with extra steps?

"Dobbiamo andare oltre Signal": l'interruzione di AWS di oggi mostra i punti deboli delle app centralizzate

"Signal è un'ottima app di messaggistica con una privacy e una crittografia straordinarie, ma è basata su un sistema centralizzato con sede negli Stati Uniti. Un servizio che esiste solo in un posto diventa molto più facile da bloccare o attaccare."
