Sooo I guess at this point it's just literally the old background blur with extra steps?

"Dobbiamo andare oltre Signal": l'interruzione di AWS di oggi mostra i punti deboli delle app centralizzate
"Signal è un'ottima app di messaggistica con una privacy e una crittografia straordinarie, ma è basata su un sistema centralizzato con sede negli Stati Uniti. Un servizio che esiste solo in un posto diventa molto più facile da bloccare o attaccare."

"We need to go beyond Signal" – How today's AWS outage shows the weaknesses of centralized apps
Signal's privacy and security are great, but being a centralized app makes it vulnerable. Element explains to TechRadar why we do need decentralized apps more than ever.
Today's AWS debacle is the perfect example of the reason why in the last few years I started to be less enthusiastic about Signal, and more oriented to federated or even P2P solutions like XMPP and Jami. I wrote about it already:
https://gagliardoni.net/#im_battle_2025
Signal was down for few hours today, after an outage that affected AWS:

Let's ignore for a second the blind reliance on AWS or any other cloud provider. In a decentralized system, this would not have happened, or at least it would have not impacted so many users.
Yes, I am a cryptographer myself, I know that Signal's encryption is the best. But encryption is not everything. Availability issues, geopolitical troubles, risk of enshittification, limitations on users' freedom to use and control the software lead to a lack of trust, even in a supersecure solution. And I say that with honest admiration for the folks at Signal, who are doing a great job.
May they prove me wrong over and over again.

PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

#YouTube making the absolute worst random changes that nobody asked for and that enrage their whole userbase for over a decade (but the users will eat it up and it's gonna keep happening forever because "muh youtube has no alternatives" when there actually are it's just that the youtubers would rather keep sucking NordVPN's dick than start using the alternatives and promote them to their viewers).
