Pro-Correa, socialist Presidential candidate Andrés Arauz won the first round of the elections with 32% of the vote, defeating neoliberal conservative banker Guillermo Lasso and Yaku Perez.

The election appears to show a clear rejection of neoliberalism by Ecuadoreans . Under President Rafael Correa, millions were lifted out of poverty and living standards rose. His successor, Lenin Moreno favoured relations with the US and rejected Correa’s socialism, instead imposing harsh austerity measures on Ecuadoreans.
