Pro-Correa, socialist Presidential candidate Andrés Arauz won the first round of the elections with 32% of the vote, defeating neoliberal conservative banker Guillermo Lasso and Yaku Perez.
The election appears to show a clear rejection of neoliberalism by Ecuadoreans . Under President Rafael Correa, millions were lifted out of poverty and living standards rose. His successor, Lenin Moreno favoured relations with the US and rejected Correa’s socialism, instead imposing harsh austerity measures on Ecuadoreans.

The Yalta conference between the ‘Big 3’ US President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British PM Winston Churchill and Soviet Premier Joseph Stalin concludes.
The conference crucially gained Stalin’s promise to target Imperial Japan once Germany was defeated.
This would be the final time the ‘Big 3’ would meet, with President Roosevelt passing away in April of 1945, just weeks away from the complete capitulation of Nazi Germany and the capture of Berlin by the Soviet Red Army.

Fidel Castro is sworn in as Cuba’s🇨🇺 Prime Minister after an armed uprising against the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista. Batista was seen as a puppet of the US, with much of Cuba’s economy ending up in the hands of American companies .
By the late 1950s, US financial interests owned 90% of Cuban mines, 80% of its public utilities, 50% of its railways, 40% of its sugar production and 25% of Cuba’s bank deposits. The prevailing situation sparked widespread discontent against Batista and general anti-American sentiment, leading to widespread support for Castro’s communist insurgency.
