On this day in 1968, Saigon police chief Nguyên Ngoc Loan executes Viet Cong officer Nguyên Vän Lém with a pistol shot to the head. The execution is captured by photographer Eddie Adams and becomes an icon of the global anti-war movement against the US' imperial war against Vietnam🇻🇳.

The US war against Vietnam is estimated to have killed more than 3 million people, with half of the deaths being Vietnamese civilians. During the war, the US launched Operation Ranch Hand, spraying South Vietnamese forests with Agent Orange to destroy foliage with was used by the Viet Cong. The Red Cross of Vietnam estimates 1 million were disabled or suffered health problems due to exposure.

North Vietnamese communist forces and the Viet Minh eventually succeeded in liberating the country from US occupation and reuniting the country.
