Google Files received a continuation of the Material You redesign on phones and tablets.
We first reported on the app's upcoming redesign in early March, after which we discovered that the main goal of the redesign was to add a dual-pane layout for tablets.
In the new UI dynamic colors now also apply to the page footer, various components such as lists have been converted into containers with rounded corners, and the logo in the top bar has been replaced with a search bar.
Google started rolling out the new design to a narrow range of users a couple of weeks ago, and today enabled it for everyone from the server side.

Now you can log into your Google account using Passkeys.
A year ago, such major companies as Google, Apple and Microsoft announced the support for passwordless sign-in using Passkeys. Thus, instead of using a password and 2-SV you will only need to enter your email and confirm your identity on another device using your fingerprint, facial recognition, screen lock or a hardware e-key.
Google has already started sending out emails about the change. You can also enable "Skip password when possible" and try/setup Passkeys on your device on the appropriate pages.

Google and Apple are teaming up to create a specification that will prevent people from being tracked using Bluetooth tags.
Bluetooth location tracking tags help users find personal items through crowdsourced finding networks. But there have been cases with unwanted tracking of people.
To combat the misuse of Bluetooth location tracking tags, Google and Apple have jointly introduced a proposed industry specification. It would allow such devices to be compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts across Android and iOS platforms. Samsung, Tile, Chipolo, eufy Security and Pebblebee have already expressed support for the project.
Based on the feedback, Google and Apple will release a production implementation of the specification for unwanted tracking alerts by the end of 2023 that will then be supported in future versions of Android and iOS.

Google Files rolling out new "Important" tab.
It looks like the rollout is only for users from India. This tab was announced in December at the "Google for India 2022" event in collaboration with the National e-Government Division (NeGD). It also talked about integration with Digilocker, but so far it's not available.
The Important tab is a safe place to keep important documents like your passport, Aadhaar card, or PAN card. You can copy details from your documents straight from the app, which makes it easy to enter details like your PAN or passport number into online forms. You can also search the Important tab for your documents or filter by category.
However, the Safe Folder still remains. The Important tab is biometrically protected or device-locked and is intended for convenient document storage, while the Safe Folder allows you to set a custom lock key and is intended for all files.

Google Photos will have a new Memories feed on its home page.
The new experiment features a slider above the navigation bar between "All Photos" and "Memories" in the Photos tab. When you switch to Memories, you'll see a feed with photos of certain events presented as collages with different frame shapes.
Clicking on them will open the usual interface of memories in the form of stories. There's also an option to rename memories by long tap or a special 'Edit' button on the top right."
For now, this is an experiment and is not available to users.

Google plans to introduce the Google Pixel Watch 2 along with the Pixel 8.
9to5Google's source reports that the company may unveil the second generation of its own WearOS-powered watch as early as this year. The Pixel Watch 2 (name yet to be confirmed) is currently scheduled to be released alongside the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro in October.
The company will most likely stick to the same design and keep backward compatibility with the the first gen bands. Definitely will reduce the display bezel and will likely use a new chip. (The first gen used a four-year-old Samsung Exynos 9110).

Google Weather on Android will finally get a Material You redesign.
Some Googler on Twitter (no link, unfortunately) showed the upcoming redesign of the weather page, which involves a single main feed, instead of three pages "Today", "Tomorrow" and "10 days". All of this data is now arranged underneath each other. Perhaps there will be expandable sections with info on each day.
In addition to this, the search bar has also been changed to a pill shape, just like the rest of the Google apps. Whether it will be a separate app, or still a built-in Google Search solution, remains to be seen.
Luckily, everyone's favorite frog has stayed in place ;)

Google Photos Edit tool will be optimized for tablets in landscape mode.
Until now, it has looked like a stretched mobile version, but Google will soon change that. The main editing tools will now be on the right, while the photo being edited will be displayed on the left. But some adjustment elements will still appear below the photo. Portrait mode remained unchanged.
This layout was possible to enable in the latest version of the Google Photos app, and at the moment, it is hidden from users.
