On January 9, 1493, Columbus saw three “mermaids” near the Dominican Republic. He said, “They are not as beautiful as they are painted, for their faces had some masculine traits.” These were actually manatees, big sea animals with whiskers. Sailors often thought manatees were mermaids because they look a little like people from far away.

Nightingale floors were used long ago in temples and palaces like Nijō Castle in Kyoto, Japan. They made a squeaking sound when stepped on because nails rubbed against clamps under the floor. This helped protect the buildings by warning people of intruders.

Unless you count old squeaky stairs, we don't use this security system anymore.😉

In 46 BC, Julius Caesar added 90 extra days to the year, making it 445 days long. This was done to fix the calendar’s drift from the solar year. The previous calendar was out of sync with the seasons. Caesar introduced the Julian calendar, which included leap years every four years to keep the calendar aligned with the sun.

Cordite, a smokeless gunpowder invented in the late 1800s, was made by mixing guncotton and nitroglycerine into cords. Early versions caused rapid barrel wear, but formula changes and additives like mineral jelly improved stability and lowered burning temperatures. During WWII, Cordite RDN reduced gun flash and smoke. Though not abandoned for safety, Cordite was gradually phased out after WWII, replaced by safer, more efficient propellants with better performance and less barrel erosion. 💥🔫

Tomatoes kept in the fridge at 4°C lose their smell and taste after a few hours. When taken out, the smell comes back but not fully. One type loses more smell, while another type gets more bad flavors after being cold for a long time. Cold storage changes how tomatoes taste and smell, making them less fresh.
Never keep your tomatoes in the fridge, avoid buying refrigerated ones too.
