Good morning.

I really hate the America vs Europe nonsense on Telegram, it’s like a never ending abyss that sucks you in when you feel your nation is being denigrated, and it stings more because it is ultimately a sort of brother war waged within a movement of people that take each other quite seriously.

But on the issue of the right to keep and bear arms, freedom of speech and other nice things to be had in America — not everything in America is nice, but hey, we’re pretty good on those issues — the argument I keep seeing from some people in European (not all, not all!) is that “you Americans never do anything with your guns/freedom to actually resist tyranny, so see, those things don’t matter at all!”

Now think about this: If you’re European, does this really sound right to you? Do you subscribe to this idea that having certain rights (guns rights, freedom of speech & etc…) doesn’t matter because supposedly, Americans aren’t doing anything? Do you need Americans to prove to you that having these rights actually matters? If Americans resist tyranny with their guns, is that what you need as proof of their utility? Would your opinion change? If Americans fail, is that proof that you, as a European, don’t need them and that it doesn’t matter?

Do you Europeans need Americans to lead the way for you? Do you need Americans to prove to you what works and what doesn’t?

Come on…

If I were European, of course I would be a bit envious of the rights Americans have, but I wouldn’t give into an attitude of sour grapes. Rather, I would say “if only we had those guns, we’d show those fat lazy yanks how it’s done, how to resist tyranny!”

That’s a better attitude.

This is why the right to bear arms is important. Whites in South Africa have no such right, so they can’t fight back very effectively. They can have alarms to warn them when they’re about to be attacked or dogs for the same thing as well as some defence, but if the perpetrators have guns (as they often do) they’ll just shoot the dogs anyway. The police are useless and often complicit, so what’s left for them? I guess protests and petitioning a government that is openly hostile to them?
