My limbs were amputated after sepsis, says MP Craig Mackinlay
Conservative MP Craig Mackinlay is due to return to Parliament for the first time after suffering a life-threatening episode of sepsis which led to the amputation of his hands and feet.

The South Thanet MP recalled the shock of waking from an induced coma to find his limbs had turned completely black.
He says they were "like plastic... you could almost knock them... they were black, desiccating, clenched".

Memorial Day: my personal reflections on service and policy.

Memorial Day is a tough day for many, myself included for many reasons. On the on hand, I want to honor our fallen and remember their sacrifice, and on the other I have to come to terms with the realization that their sacrifice, in the grand scheme of things has ultimately not benefitted the world or our nation. That does not negate or diminish, that our brothers and sisters were sent to their deaths with the ideal of achieving something great, believing that their service would do good for the world and our nation. The reality is however, that our wars, specifically those in the 20th and 21st centuries perpetuated further bloodshed and countless millions killed as a result of our governments foreign policies, and we the military were used as the instrument to push an agenda on sovereign nations, and the pretext for war was generated by our own government with great influence from foreign government agencies. We have no business dictating to other nations their culture, form of government, their policies, or monetary systems. We in America do not even provide affordable food, clean drinking water, or decent public education to our own people, but dump billions on foreign countries at the expense of our own. Our representatives do not even make an attempt to curb the violence in our streets or the drugs pouring in over our border that leaves hundreds of thousands of Americans dead and destroys entire families every year. It is time to restore constitutional governance and if we go to war it is because it is not only right and just to do so, but directly benefits the American people and is a result of a direct threat to our nation and way of life that is unavoidable and must be confronted. I tire of the endless proxy wars and illegal unconstitutional non congressionally approved "police actions" where the best and brightest of our youth are sacrificed to enrich the defense contracting industry and push political agendas at home and abroad. I tire of our veterans being mistreated and abused after their service left to deal with wounds mental and physical that do not heal without proper care, discarded after the system is done with them as if they mean nothing except for political stunts and photo ops during campaign season. I am tired of our government abusing it's power and neglecting the best interests of our nation and it's people, chosing to support and fund foreign nations over our own because they are bribed and blackmailed into doing so by those foreign governments. Today we honor those who gave their lives for the ideal of America and it's freedoms. It is not so much a celebration, as it is a day of somber remembrance.

If you look at the whole human history of standing armies (dedicated/professional militaries) it seems rather difficult to find solid examples of this institution primarily serving the security interests of the common people. In this context, “defense” was often just a pretext for war against some rival nation.
