I’ve been on a long road trip. I drove through the Chicago area for the first time in my life, and I can confirm that the Chicago area is the ugliest patch of the United States that I have ever seen in my life. It looks like a concrete company got together with brutalist architecture enthusiasts to engineer a city that looks like a sanitarium crossed with a prison and a factory. This is where all the negative stereotypes of “ugly American” are actually real, but it’s not America, it’s just this patch called Chicago.

It’s clearly the industrial and logistical heart of the country, which is why the landscape is litters with concrete-glass boxes and billboards along the massive highways.

If Chicago was all of the United States that you ever saw, you’d think this is the whole country. It’s not. The Chicago area is so fugly, the old boarded-up townhouses in the black ghettos of Baltimore and Cleveland have infinitely more charm than the modernist pavement boxes dotted along the Chicago mega-highway.
