David Whyte, the Irish poet and philosopher, views poetry as a way to explore the sacred and hidden parts of our lives. In an interview, he spoke about how moments of doubt and feeling lost are not signs of failure but signs that you are on the right path, because the true path often disappears as you walk it. When asked, “What do I do when I am lost in the forest?”, he recited David Wagoner’s poem, which begins with: “Stand still. The trees ahead and bushes beside you are not lost.” The poem urges us to be still, listen, and let the world find us. Whyte believes poetry teaches us to pause, pay attention, and trust the silence and uncertainty. It’s a guide that invites us to slow down and rediscover ourselves through presence and attention, even, especially, when we feel most lost.

The modern negative flywheel
CT loves to talk about flywheels (pls pasternack). But take a look IRL and you notice a darker negative flywheel in our society.
Been seeing a lot of doom posting (reddit, tiktok, mainstream news, tiktok) on why so many feel…

Meanwhile, mainstream conversation continues to move further away from intellectualism entirely. Dominant media platforms prefer fleeting distractions and sensationalized headlines rather than a space to prioritize substance and intellectual discussion.

The death of the public intellectual
is Hailey Bieber the new Susan Sontag?
i have a theory that people are also afraid of intellectual discussions because it only reminds them of the state that they are in
the spiritual vacancy and feeling a lack of control over one's own life only leads to individuals seeking control in other ways - brainrot (distractions), labubu, spending habits
going back to maslow's hierarchy of needs, its no surprise that somehow those that have achieved wealth start to seek higher meaning, because for majority they aren't able to secure foundational levels to start participating in discourse (whether public or private)
tldr; society chooses to be distracted and would rather doomscroll for hours than have intellectual discourse. this means that even if a public intellectual steps up, he/she will not get the spotlight they deserve, whereas dances and trends would on your algorithm

A wise old owl lived in an oak,
The more he saw the less he spoke,
The less he spoke, the more he heard,
Why aren't we all like that wise old bird?

Most of optimizing existence in this century will be in the pursuit of less. In building resilience where the world asks you to take more - because that's the only way you give your brain a break.
Less, is ironically more.

On the maladies of more.
There are two facts that repeat a lot in my mind.
1. One is that the average person will consume more sugar in the next two weeks than an individual in the 18th century would have in an entire year.
2. And that the average internet…
