The Devil’s Checkmate by Friedrich Moritz August Retzsch

I’ve been very intrigued by this painting recently and have been thinking about it for awhile

The painting depicts a player against the devil, where the player is being “checkmated”

my thoughts:
- the angel is always there for you, as long as you choose not to deal with the devil, but they cannot intervene while you are
- the king has one more move, it’s never over
- we always have a way out against the devil
- the devil’s face depicts worry, hoping the player would not spot the right move
- the devil is afraid of the player leaving/winning the game, because we ALWAYS have a choice
- the angel can only observe in pity as the player agonises over his position
- dealing with the devil is always a losing game and it brings nothing but torture eventually
