Beowulf is a hero venerated in Engaland though his tales place him as originating in Geatland in modern day Sweden making him one of the feared Svear Warriors of the north. The poem or epic we are all familiar with is but a fraction of his stories though many have been forgot many are mentioned in the telling of his tale that we still have alluding to oh so many great and heroic deeds!

His many impressive deeds as with any hero spread not only his fame but his veneration far and wide which explains his veneration even on the isle of Albion or modern day Great Britain where he became or possibly even started as a god.

"Pagan" Symbols

What if I told You There Are No Such Things as "Pagan" Symbols? "Pagan" History? Or Even "Pagan" Gods?

Let Me Explain...

What we call "Pagan" is merely a term used to refer to the Instinctive Ethnic Ways innate to OUR people. To the point that it was not uncommon to call unbaptized children "Little Pagans". The term however has become corrupted into a dichotomy of Abrahamic Vs. Non-Abrahamic. History, Ancestry and even Symbols the entirety of a peoples inheritance is split, uprooted and taken from them.

This is such a strong split that it is not uncommon for peoples to consider their Genesis as a Tribe or Nation to be within the last 1500 or even 1000 years. This has caused a disconnect present throughout entire cultures wherein it is not uncommon to find people cheering the conquest of their own people by the church; because those "Pagans" weren't them, even if their blood, their ancestry and history is entirely tied up with them. It is to the Church that most end up tracing their history from their peoples conquest to Christianity's Judeo-Roman origins and then before Yeshua tied into the Old Testament.

This severs most from their history, their ancestry, the entirety of their inheritance stretching back through the ages. The "Pagan Gods" are not pagan gods, They are OUR gods! Jurate, Brigid, Thor, Heracles, Dajbog, Väinämöinen etc. Not only that by OUR lore these gods ARE our ancestors both in flesh and in soul. These symbols and stories are OURS they are not pagan. Nor are they lost as some supposedly foolish religion before the coming of the Church, they are a part of us. Our INHERITANCE!

The longer we continue to allow the false schism to persist the further we will be torn from our own peoples Neverending Story. An attack on OUR gods is an attack on US, an attack on "Our Ethnic Ways" is an attack on OUR cultures and the peoples.

Scarecrows?

The humble scarecrow symbol of rural life, Harvest time and holidays like Halloween and Thanksgiving. But there is more to this idol than meets the eye... for starters ever notice he doesn't scare away crows?

The reason for this is that scaring birds away is actually not ideal as birds tend to eat pests more than they do seeds. But mostly this is not the purpose of the Scarecrow. So what is his purpose? Well... people like him of course! Same reason we do anything -oh you wanted more? Like Lorewise? oh ok-

Modern scarecrows are centuries old but descend of much older customs. Notably the idol of the fertility god in the field as seen with the Corn Giant Wode or the Greek Priapus. The latter of which often had an idol kept in the field -sometimes with a threatening message of gross sexual harm by the god on anyone who messes with the garden, Greek gardeners weren't messing around-

Meanwhile in Germany and the German Diaspora we find the tradition of The Butzemann, a plant spirit placed into a Scarecrow to guard and tend fields. Near Halloween The Butzemann is burned and its spirit is taken by The Wild Hunt, in Pennsylvania Dutch tradition The Butzemann is take by Frau Holle and allowed to reincarnate from her mill. In Saxony-Anhalt the Giantess Frau Harke appears as a Scarecrow in carnival processions.

In the modern day Scarecrows are more a Halloween and Thanksgiving decoration found at your neighbors home vs. the Rural fields.
However the Scarecrow has immortalized itself in modern culture. Appearing as the Monster in Jeepers Creepers, a recurring villain for Batman, as well as the Companion of Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz.

So next time you see a Scarecrow in the fields or in the foyer, remember the long long history and the gods and ghosts who like to smile from its burlap and pumpkin headed visage. -TLK
