The Arch Linux developers have announced a change aimed at improving compatibility with Windows games run via Wine or Steam (using Proton). Similar to the change in the Fedora 39 release, the sysctl parameter vm.max_map_count, which specifies the maximum number of memory mapping areas available to a process, has been increased from 65530 to 1048576 by default. The change is included in the filesystem 2024.04.07-1 package.

When using the previous default of 65530, attempting to run many games in Wine, including DayZ, Hogwarts Legacy, Counter Strike 2, Star Citizen, and THE FINALS, resulted in a crash. In addition, it is noted that increasing vm.max_map_count also solves some performance issues for memory intensive applications.

Canonical announces collaboration with Qualcomm

This is very good news, as it could create competition for Apple with their laptops powered by the Apple M1/M2/M3 processor, which in turn could lead to a new leap in the quality of ARM-based laptops.

For exmaple, Snapdragon X ELite with 12 Oryon cores clocking up to 3.8GHz (4.3GHz boost), Adreno graphics, Hegagon NPU, and other updates this is quite an interesting ARM laptop processor to look forward to this year. Qualcomm has shown (Debian) Linux on some Snapdragon X Elite hardware already and hopefully today's collaboration between Qualcomm and Canonical will lead to good Ubuntu support for these upcoming laptops.
